| Who is Kamal Singh Jamwal, the man who tried to shoot Dr Farooq Abdullah? | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 12: A major security scare unfolded in Jammu late Wednesday night when a man allegedly attempted to shoot National Conference president and former Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah during a wedding function in the Greater Kailash area. Alert security personnel overpowered the attacker before he could carry out the assault, preventing what could have been a serious incident. The accused has been identified as 64-year-old Kamal Singh Jamwal, a resident of Purani Mandi in Jammu. During initial questioning, Jamwal reportedly confessed that he had been planning to kill the veteran political leader for nearly two decades. In a video that later went viral on social media, Jamwal is heard claiming that he had long harboured the intention to eliminate Dr. Abdullah. “For the last 20 years, I had been planning to kill Dr. Farooq Abdullah. Today I got the opportunity at the marriage function, but I missed the chance,” he allegedly said. According to security officials, the incident occurred at around 10:30 pm at Royal Park in Greater Kailash, where Dr. Abdullah had arrived to attend a wedding ceremony. Jamwal was also present at the function as a guest. Taking advantage of the gathering, he allegedly approached the National Conference leader and attempted to fire at him. However, alert security personnel, including members of Dr. Abdullah’s security detail, immediately overpowered the accused. During the scuffle, the bullet was fired into the air, and the former Chief Minister escaped unharmed. Officials said that even a slight delay by security personnel could have led to serious consequences. Jamwal reportedly showed no remorse during preliminary interrogation and reiterated that he had wanted to kill Dr. Abdullah for the past 20 years. The accused told investigators that he had attended the wedding of his cousin Shatrujit Singh’s son and had been invited to the ceremony. He claimed he saw the event as an opportunity to execute his long-planned attack, but the attempt failed. Police sources said Jamwal does not hold a regular job and earns his livelihood from rent received from two clothing shops that he owns. Investigations have also revealed that Jamwal had earlier been active in politics. The son of Ajit Singh Jamwal, he was associated with the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party and had contested the councillor election from Ward No. 11 in Purani Mandi on the party’s ticket. Guests present at the wedding said they were initially unaware of the incident due to loud DJ music and the bursting of firecrackers. The sudden commotion near the venue later alerted people to the situation, briefly triggering panic among those present. The music and firecrackers were immediately stopped as security personnel took control of the situation. Police soon reached the venue, appealed for calm, and began their investigation. Chief Minister’s Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, who arrived at the spot, said Dr. Abdullah was safe. “It is Allah’s grace that everything is safe. Thanks to everyone’s prayers, Dr. Farooq Abdullah is completely fine and will speak about the incident on Thursday,” he said. Several political leaders had gathered at the wedding ceremony of the daughter of a member of the National Conference’s legal cell and had been present at the venue for nearly an hour before the incident occurred. According to reports, as Dr. Abdullah was leaving the venue, Jamwal allegedly approached him from behind and pointed a pistol at him. Security personnel immediately pushed the attacker to the ground, causing the bullet to be fired into the air. He was quickly overpowered and later handed over to the police. Following the incident, most guests were asked to leave the venue, and the ceremony continued only with close family members before concluding peacefully. |
