Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 21: Drawing lessons from the August 2025 cloudburst tragedy in Chishoti, which claimed 48 lives, the administration has intensified preparations to ensure a safe and smooth Machail Mata Yatra in Kishtwar district this year.
In a significant step, pilgrims undertaking the annual yatra will be provided with Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) cards and real-time weather updates, similar to the system adopted for the Vaishno Devi shrine. The move aims to enhance tracking, safety, and timely decision-making during adverse weather conditions.
Officials said an integrated system is being developed to disseminate weather alerts and monitor pilgrim movement. Special focus is being laid on identifying landslide-prone stretches along the route, given the region’s vulnerability to sudden weather changes.
The pilgrimage, which commences in April and attracts thousands of devotees every year, is being closely monitored by the divisional administration. Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, has directed officials to ensure comprehensive safety arrangements.

rtance of equipping pilgrims with RFID cards and timely weather information. He also instructed departments to prepare a detailed emergency response plan and conduct mock drills ahead of the yatra to test preparedness.
Authorities have been directed to remain fully equipped to handle emergencies, with backup facilities such as generator sets to ensure uninterrupted services.
Medical preparedness is also being strengthened, with instructions to deploy doctors, paramedical staff, ambulances, and essential medicines round the clock.
To prevent overcrowding and chaos, stricter crowd management protocols will be implemented this year. Officials have been asked to ensure regulated movement of pilgrims while maintaining their convenience.
In addition, arrangements for accommodation, sanitation, electricity, water supply, langar services, and parking facilities are being upgraded. Officers will also be stationed at key government accommodations to oversee operations and assist pilgrims.
The administration hopes that these enhanced measures will ensure a safe and incident-free Machail Mata Yatra, while restoring confidence among devotees after last year’s tragedy.
