Who are ‘anti-nationals’ in J&K Congress? Vikar Rasool’s remark triggers speculation

Early Times Report

Jammu, May 23: Senior Congress leader and Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Vikar Rasool Wani on Friday intensified the ongoing infighting within the Jammu and Kashmir Congress, calling for a mass mobilisation of party workers and hinting at a campaign against what he termed “anti-national elements” within the organisation.
Addressing a public rally in Khour area of Akhnoor subdivision, Wani urged Congress workers to prepare for a large-scale march from Jammu and Kashmir to Delhi, claiming that the exercise would expose and isolate those allegedly working against the party’s core ideology.
“In the coming days, there will be a revolution within the J&K Congress. This movement will begin from Jammu, and thousands of party workers will march towards Delhi to uproot the anti-national elements in the party,” Wani said while concluding his address.
His remarks have triggered fresh speculation within political circles, particularly over whom he was referring to as “anti-national elements” within the Congress ranks.
The statement came amid escalating tensions between rival factions in the Jammu and Kashmir Congress. Earlier in the day, Wani launched a sharp attack on Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Hamid Karra, questioning his political background, ideological commitments, and role in shaping the party’s strategy during the 2024 Assembly elections.
The comments were made at a public gathering organised by former Deputy Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Tara Chand in Khour and are being viewed as one of the strongest public criticisms of the current PCC leadership by a senior Congress functionary.
The latest episode has further exposed deepening divisions within the party, which has been witnessing internal dissent since the Assembly election results and subsequent organisational appointments.
Although Wani did not name Karra directly, his remarks appeared to be aimed at the JKPCC chief and his supporters.
“We have to examine the past records of those who are wearing yellow turbans and Gandhi caps these days,” Wani said, in an apparent reference to Karra’s political journey before joining the Congress.
Seeking to highlight the political past of some leaders currently occupying influential positions in the party, Wani alleged that certain individuals had previously advocated positions that were contrary to the Congress party’s nationalist ideology.
“They are the same people who had moved resolutions in the Legislative Assembly of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir seeking the introduction of Pakistani currency alongside Indian currency,” he alleged.
Wani’s remarks are expected to further intensify the power struggle within the Jammu and Kashmir Congress at a time when the party is attempting to strengthen its organisational structure and rebuild its political base in the Union Territory.
The Congress leadership has not yet issued any official response to Wani’s comments. However, political observers believe the latest war of words could deepen factionalism within the party and pose fresh challenges to efforts aimed at presenting a united front ahead of future political battles.
