Jammu, Sept 5: In a sweeping crackdown that has sent shockwaves through Jammu and Kashmir’s security establishment, the Narcotics Control Bureau’s Jammu Zonal Unit has torn the lid off two separate — and deeply entrenched — heroin smuggling corridors feeding poison into the region, seizing a staggering 6.92 kilograms of the deadly drug in coordinated raids spanning Jammu, Samba, and even neighbouring Punjab.
The operation has exposed what officials describe as a sophisticated, multi-state trafficking machine with tentacles stretching from across the Pakistan border all the way to Punjab’s Ludhiana — a chilling reminder of how narco-terror networks continue to exploit the region’s porous frontiers.
At the heart of the bust lies a direct smuggling channel allegedly running from Pakistan straight through the sensitive Uri sector into Jammu and Kashmir.
In a major swoop, NCB sleuths recovered a massive 5.160 kg haul of heroin, tracing the consignment’s origins back across the border. The investigation didn’t stop at the seizure officers hunted down and arrested the alleged supplier all the way in Leh, unraveling a trail that stretched across the length of the Union Territory.
The second front cracked open on September 3, when NCB officials intercepted a passenger bus near the New Bus Stand in Samba, pulling out 522 grams of heroin concealed by a man from Kakapora in Pulwama. Interrogation blew the lid off a Ludhiana link — a fast follow-up raid in Punjab netted another 197 grams, pushing the Samba-Ludhiana module’s total haul to 719 grams and confirming fears that Punjab has become a critical transit point for narcotics flooding into the Valley.
Not stopping there, NCB teams stormed drug-hit settlements across the Jammu-Samba belt in two separate operations, hauling out an additional 438 grams and 603 grams of heroin — further exposing just how deeply the narcotics network has burrowed into local communities.
Officials said the crackdown is far from over. The agency has made clear its mission extends well beyond confiscating consignments — it is now zeroing in on suppliers, recipients, financiers, and every other cog in the trafficking machine, vowing to dismantle the network root and branch.
In a direct appeal to citizens, the NCB has urged the public to come forward with any information on drug trafficking, assuring complete confidentiality for informants via the national MANAS narcotics helpline, 1933.
With cross-border and inter-state links now firmly established, investigators warn this could be just the tip of a much larger narco-network threatening the region’s youth and security alike. |
