JAMMU, Sept 11: Renowned social activist Parvinder Singh Happy has expressed serious concern over the demolition drives being carried out at Satwari Chowk and Nai Basti, urging the competent authorities to come forward and place a clear and factual position before the public regarding the rehabilitation and allotment of alternative spaces to the affected shopkeepers. Happy said his intervention was not aimed at gaining any political mileage from the issue, but was purely motivated by concern for the shopkeepers and their families, many of whom depend entirely on their business establishments for their livelihood. He said that while the competent authorities have initiated demolition proceedings, uncertainty continues to prevail among the affected traders regarding their rehabilitation and the allotment of alternative sites. He pointed out that various political leaders have already visited the affected locations and participated in dharnas along with aggrieved shopkeepers, demanding proper rehabilitation and allotment of suitable spaces in lieu of the shops being demolished. However, he said, the continuing grievances of the traders indicate that a clear picture regarding the actual status of allotments has yet to emerge. According to Happy, several affected shopkeepers have been expressing their apprehensions on social media and alleging that they have not been treated fairly. Some have also raised allegations of step-motherly treatment by the administration and questioned the role of elected representatives in protecting their interests. He said such allegations should not be allowed to remain unanswered and that the administration has a responsibility to clarify the facts and remove any confusion among the affected people. Happy called upon the responsible officers of the administration to come forward and issue a formal statement through the media explaining the exact status of the rehabilitation process. He said the authorities should make it clear whether alternative sites have been identified for the affected shopkeepers, whether allotments have already been made, and whether all eligible beneficiaries have been covered under the rehabilitation arrangement. |
