Jammu, Dec 7: As Jammu and Kashmir continues to grapple with the growing threat of Chitta and other synthetic drugs, neighbouring Himachal Pradesh has showcased an unprecedented model of political unity—sending a strong message across the border on how to collectively confront the crisis. In an extraordinary show of bipartisan resolve, members of the Congress Legislature Party, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, and the BJP legislators, led by Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, jointly staged a protest on the Himachal Pradesh Assembly premises. Their united stand condemned the rapidly escalating drug menace that has engulfed the hill state. Calling for a collective response, Chief Minister Sukhu urged lawmakers to shed political divides and come together to fight the crisis. “This is not a political issue. Lives are at stake, and we must act collectively,” he said. The Chief Minister revealed that the government is preparing a comprehensive anti-drug action plan, which includes: convening Gram Sabha meetings in every panchayat, offering cash rewards for credible information on drug supply networks, and strengthening local-level vigilance. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri highlighted that massive anti-drug rallies had already been held in Shimla and Dharamsala, reflecting rising public pressure to act decisively. “I will speak with the Leader of the Opposition right away. We must move together on this,” he said, underlining the necessity of cross-party cooperation. Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur echoed the sentiment, reinforcing the message that combating drug addiction must transcend political boundaries. Chief Minister Sukhu further stressed that while the state has intensified arrests and crackdowns on drug syndicates, rehabilitation remains equally crucial. “Properties of offenders are being attached. Enforcement and rehabilitation will go hand in hand,” he asserted. With both regions struggling against the scourge of drug addiction, Himachal’s rare political synergy stands out as a powerful example. While J&K witnesses frequent political clashes even on issues of social concern, Himachal’s united front demonstrates how collective will can transform the fight against narcotics. As Himachal steps up its war on drugs with unity and resolve, political observers say the message for Jammu and Kashmir is clear: only a united political front can defeat a problem that threatens the youth and the future. |
