Jammu, Jan 10: A deeply moving video from the R S Pura area of Jammu has struck an emotional chord across social media, showing a grieving mother gently wrapping a blanket around the statue of her martyred son to protect him from the biting winter cold — a gesture that has left thousands of viewers in tears.
The viral clip shows Jaswant Kaur, a resident of the Ranbir Singh Pura belt, tenderly covering the statue of her son, martyr Gurnam Singh, treating it not as stone but as her living child. Villagers say the statue was installed in the village after Gurnam Singh’s martyrdom, and since then, his mother has continued to care for it with the same love and devotion with which she once looked after her son.
She cleans it, speaks to it, and now, as the region reels under harsh winter conditions, she could not bear the thought of her “son” feeling cold.
“Winter has become very harsh this year. She kept saying, ‘My son must be feeling cold,’ and quietly brought a blanket and wrapped it around the statue,” a villager said, struggling to hold back tears.

Gurnam Singh, a constable with the 173rd Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF), was martyred in 2016 while bravely foiling a terrorist infiltration attempt along the International Border.
He was critically injured in cross-border firing from Pakistan and later succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
He had joined the BSF in 2011 and was known among his colleagues as a disciplined and fearless soldier. Years may have passed since his sacrifice, but for his mother, the wound remains as fresh as ever and in a small village of Jammu, a blanket wrapped around a statue has become a silent, powerful reminder of the price paid by soldiers’ families and the love that never fades. |
