Centre plans law to punish insult to 'Vande Mataram'

Jammu, July 17: The Narendra Modi-led Central Government is set to introduce a Bill in Parliament that seeks to make insulting or deliberately obstructing the singing of 'Vande Mataram', India's National Song, a punishable offence. According to sources, the proposed legislation is likely to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. The Bill aims to provide a legal framework to deal with incidents involving the intentional disruption, insult or obstruction of the singing or rendition of Vande Mataram. The proposed law is expected to prescribe penalties for individuals found guilty of wilfully preventing or disrupting the singing of the National Song or engaging in acts considered disrespectful towards it. The exact nature of the punishment and other provisions of the Bill are expected to become clear once the legislation is formally introduced in Parliament.
The move comes amid an increasing emphasis by the Centre on promoting national symbols and fostering respect for them. If passed by Parliament, the legislation would make any deliberate insult to or obstruction of the singing of Vande Mataram a punishable offence under law.
The Bill is expected to be taken up for discussion after it is introduced in the Rajya Sabha.
