Newborn dies, woman on ventilator after alleged private-room delivery in Rajouri

Victim shifted from GMC Rajouri by nursing staffer, ASHA worker, another woman, claims family

Rajouri, Sep. 07: A shocking incident has surfaced in Rajouri following the death of a newborn allegedly during a delivery conducted in a private room, while the mother is battling for her life on ventilator support at GMC Rajouri. The woman, reportedly a resident of Chassana in Reasi district, had been brought to GMC Rajouri for delivery.

According to the family, the pregnant woman was allegedly taken out of the hospital to a private room by a female nursing staffer, an ASHA worker and another woman, who allegedly assured the family that a normal delivery could be conducted there. The family alleged that complications developed during the delivery, following which the newborn died. The woman reportedly suffered severe bleeding and was subsequently shifted back to GMC Rajouri in critical condition.

The woman’s husband alleged that the three persons had persuaded the family to shift her to the private room by assuring them of a normal delivery. He alleged that complications during the process led to the death of his newborn, while his wife is now fighting for her life. He demanded strict action against anyone found responsible.

Meanwhile, Rajouri Police said it had taken cognisance of a written complaint regarding the circumstances surrounding the newborn’s death.

Police said FIR No. 465/2026 has been registered at Police Station Rajouri under Sections 106(1)/3(5) of the BNS, and an investigation is underway to establish the circumstances leading to the death and determine the role, if any, of the persons named in the complaint. Separately, GMC and Associated Hospital Rajouri has constituted a four-member inquiry committee following a viral video and allegations regarding the involvement of hospital staff.

The committee, headed by Medical Superintendent Dr. Shamim Ahmed, has been directed to conduct an in-depth inquiry and submit its report to the Principal within three days. The other members are Dr. Chander Sheikhar, Dr. Vidushi Badyal and Administrative Officer Hanan Shawl (JKAS).
