Jammu, Sept 28: The Legislative Assembly witnessed unprecedented uproar during the discussion and passage of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s resolution seeking restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory.
Four BJP and Congress MLAs were marshalled out amid sloganeering and protests, while BJP members objected to references to autonomy and the pre-1953 situation. The resolution was passed after heated proceedings, with the BJP later walking out of the House.
The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed an unprecedented uproar before passing a resolution seeking the restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory. Four legislators—two each from the BJP and Congress—were marshalled out of the House amid din and chaos.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s resolution demanding the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir was passed by the Assembly. During the discussion on the motion, Opposition members created a ruckus, leading to heated exchanges and repeated disruptions in the House.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah introduced the resolution on Friday. The motion stated that the House demands that the Government of India restore the full statehood of Jammu and Kashmir immediately and resolves to send the resolution to the Government of India.
While the motion was being put to vote, BJP MLAs walked out of the House. After the day’s scheduled business was completed, the Speaker adjourned the House until Tuesday.
Earlier, responding to the discussion on the motion, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he had known from day one that the BJP would oppose the resolution. He said BJP members would create a ruckus and raise slogans in the House.
Omar said, “We didn’t want this resolution to include anything that the BJP could use as an excuse to disrupt the House. They’re talking about Articles 370 and 35A, but we’re only asking for votes for statehood.”
He said that when some of his colleagues linked autonomy and Article 35A to the resolution, it gave the BJP an opportunity to oppose it.
Earlier, a massive uproar erupted in the Assembly on Monday during the discussion on the resolution introduced by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, seeking the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Four BJP and Congress MLAs were marshalled out of the House amid continued sloganeering and protests.
As the uproar escalated, BJP MLAs Vikram Randhawa and Arvind Gupta, along with Congress MLAs Irfan Hafeez Lone and Iftikhar Ahmed, were marshalled out of the House. Opposition members continued to raise slogans during the debate.
To maintain discipline in the House, the Speaker warned the protesting MLAs of strict action. He directed all members to maintain discipline and decorum during the proceedings.
The Speaker said, “Maintain discipline, or you will face strict action.”
During the uproar, BJP MLAs objected to references to autonomy and the pre-1953 situation in the resolution seeking the restoration of statehood. Meanwhile, Congress members also raised slogans and displayed banners in the House.
Protests and sloganeering repeatedly disrupted the proceedings of the Assembly. The atmosphere in the House remained heated during the discussion on the motion.
