| “Promised Dubai, landed in a cyber-slavery trap” | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 20: A dream of a high-paying job abroad can turn into a human trafficking trap. The Crime Branch has warned young people against fake recruitment agencies that lure them overseas with the promise of lucrative employment and then push them into dangerous networks of exploitation. Crime Branch DIG Abdul Qayoom said some gangs promise jobs in Dubai but route victims through Thailand and other countries, and deliver them somewhere else entirely. Complaints from victims include having their passports snatched, being pushed into illegal activities and being kept away from any legal help. “Cyber slavery” is emerging as a growing concern in such cases, he said. The DIG said victims have been rescued and brought back from several countries, including Thailand and Myanmar. However, some victims are hesitant to cooperate with investigators, which makes it difficult to trace the accused and secure convictions. People from other states have also been found to have been drawn into the same racket, he added. Police, investigating agencies and district-level anti-human trafficking units are working together to act against these networks. Qayoom appealed to the public to thoroughly verify both the recruitment agency and the job offer before travelling abroad, and not to pay any money without verification | | |
