EC writes to Law ministry; seeks limits around cash donations to political parties

Agencies New Delhi, Sept 19: The Election Commission has proposed bringing down anonymous political donations from Rs 20,000 to Rs 2,000 and cap cash donations at 20 per cent or at a maximum of Rs 20 crore to cleanse election funding of black money, sources said on Monday. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar has written a letter to Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju recommending a slew of amendments in the Representation of the People (RP) Act, sources in the government said. The proposals are aimed at ushering in reforms and transparency in donations received by political parties, and also the expenditure incurred by candidates trying their luck at the hustings, they said. The move comes in the backdrop of the poll panel recently delisting 284 defaulting and non-compliant registered unrecognised political parties (RUPPs), declaring more than 253 of them inactive. The Income-tax department recently raided a number of such entities across the country on charges of tax evasion after the EC shared its report with its administrative authority, the CBDT. Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 19: Amid complaints of harassment and blackmailing, the cyber wing of the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday cautioned people against downloading Chinese money lending apps offering online soft loans. Senior Superintendent of Police, Cyber Crime Investigation, Sandeep Chaudhary shared a 3.39-minute video clip on social media, discussing in detail the modus operandi of the culprits behind these apps. “Chinese loan app while using the internet you come across certain apps offering loans of Rs 5,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000 on a very low interest rate for a specified period. Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sept 19: The government today through its circular directions informed all those hospitals /Nursing Homes/ Diagnostic Centres/Private Clinics to immediately get registered on the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission Portal (abdm.gov.in) on the HFR Registry (Health Professional Registry). The same is said to be required as all these establishments rendering health services to the citizens shall form a integral part of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission ecosystem. The circular further reads that these directions are mandatory and may be complied at the earliest. Govt to take call on extending free ration scheme beyond Sept: Food Secy

Agencies New Delhi, Sept 19: The government will take a call on extending the PMGKAY scheme to provide free ration to the poor beyond September 30, Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey said on Monday without elaborating on when the decision is expected. The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) was launched in March 2020 to provide free 5 kg foodgrains per person per month to about 80 crore beneficiaries covered under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) to reduce their hardship during the lockdown period. 216 manned level crossings eliminated against target of 1000: Railways

Agencies New Delhi, Sept 19: Only 216 manned level crossings have been eliminated till August-end in the financial year 2022-23 against the target of 1,000 for this period, according to the Railway ministry. However, it is 10 per cent higher as compared with the progress achieved during the same period in the previous financial year, the ministry said in a release on Monday. 4.3-magnitude earthquake hits Kargil

Agencies Kargil, Sept 19: An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale occurred in Ladakh’s Kargil on Monday morning, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) informed. The earthquake took place around 9:30 am and was located 10 km below the ground. The epicentre was 151 km west-north-west of Kargil. “An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 occurred 64 km WNW of Kargil, Ladakh at around 9:30 am. Agencies New Delhi, Sept 16: The Supreme Court Monday said “denial of pension is a continuing wrong” and it cannot be oblivious to the difficulties of a retired employee in approaching the courts, which could include financial constraints.
