Methodology to testify quality of drinking water framed

KULGAM: Highlighting the need to have credible data bank depicting quality of water, Deputy Commissioner Kulgam, Jahangir Mir Tuesday directed for conducting sampling of all water sources used for drinking purposes in the district. Chairing a joint meeting of officers of PHE, Health, Rural Development, Social Welfare and representatives of Communication & Capacity Development Unit (CCDU) – an NGO here, the Deputy Commissioner called for joint endeavour of all the concerned departments to obtain a reliable data bank, which could be used for formulation of pragmatic action plans to tap safe drinking water.
It was decided in the meeting that CCDU will organize a program in the 1st week of May to aware ground functionaries of Health, PHE, Social Welfare and Rural Development about the sampling techniques following which joint teams of these departments will fan out across the district to collect water samples for laboratory testing.
He said, the CCDU in collaboration with concerned departments will testify the quality parameters of waters, adding that capacities will be built among the concerned officials after taking rectification measures to make safe potable water available to the consumers.
The credible data bank so obtained will form basic parameter to work out the future water planning in the district; he said and stressed the need for making all water sources free from contamination and pollution to keep water borne diseases at bay.
The Deputy Commissioner said that PRIs of all the concerned villages should be roped in, both in water sampling and awareness programs for better results. He said the entire process should be carried out in a transparent & scientific manner, reminding that water constitutes the basic necessity of life and development.
The Deputy Commissioner appreciated the voluntary facilitation of CCDU in checking the quality of water across the district an d rendering all technical assistance in supplying pure and safe drinking water to the people of the district.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Gulzar Ahmad, Assistant Commissioner Revenue, Chief Planning Officer, CMO, Executive Engineers PHE, ACD, BDOs, BMOs and other officers besides representatives of CCDU headed by Dr. Tariq, participated in the meeting.
