Terrorists strike at Sunjwan army camp in wee hours, three ultras eliminated

JAMMU, Feb 10: Terrorists the in wee hours today struck at an army camp in Sunjwan, some three kilometers away from Police Headquarters Jammu and also the Jammu railway station. Three terrorists have been eliminated while as two army personnel also lost their lives in the encounter, when last reports came in.
As per the details available with Early Times, the terrorist first strike at around 4.50 AM from the front side of the camp towards Jammu-Pathankot National Highway side which was foiled by the active army personnel on duty, but the terrorists after sometime again attacked the camp, this time from the backside and manage to enter inside the camp and manage to hold within the residential quarters of the military garrison that witnessed second terror attack after July 2003.
During the heavy exchange of fire, a JCO Madan Lal Chowdhary and his daughter was injured at first instance with the militants managing to enter inside the family quarters within the military garrison spread over hundreds of Kanals of land with one side touching the National Highway and at the back side densely populated areas of Zubair Abad and Chawadhi are located.
Some huge explosion was also heard after terrorist sneak inside the camp. The security forces cordoned off the area and efforts were started to eliminate the terrorists holding inside the army camp. The initial report stated that 4-5 militants are holding up inside the camp and are said to be from Jaish e Mujahdeen group based in Pakistan.
However the top officials are tight lipped over the incident added that they are busy in operation and whatever details could be gathered will be shared with media only once the operation will be over. The sources even did not rule out the possibility of involvement of local militants.
The sources also linked the attack to commensurate the death anniversary of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru and JKLF founder member of JKLF Maqbool Butt hanged inside Tihar Jail on February 9 and February 11 respectively.
The army officials while briefing the media outside the camp confirmed the death of two Army personnel, both hailing from Jammu and Kashmir besides nine persons including five women, three children of army personal also getting injured. They said that all the injured were evacuated to hospital where the condition of two is said to be critical.
Top sources confirmed to Early Times about the death of two militants in ongoing encounter besides also confirming the recovery of huge quantity of arms and ammunition adding that around 150 family quarters were scrutinized by the anti-militancy operation team comprising of army, J&K police, Para commandos airlifted from Udhampur and Sirsa Haryana military Base.
The sources said that the night operation has been put on hold adding that efforts are being made to finish the operation without suffering any further collateral damage. The sources said that militants were carrying AK 56 rifles, rifle grenades and food stuff along with themselves to prolong the encounter.
Meanwhile, the state government informed the assembly that two Army personnel were killed in the ongoing Fidayeen attack on Sunjwan Military Station till the last reports came in.
Making a statement in the House regarding the incident, Minister for Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs, A R Veeri said that at about 0410 hours a group of Fidayeen attacked Sunjwan Military Station (36 Brigade) resulting in death of Subedar Madan Lal Chowdhary and Subedar Mohammad Ashraf Mir besides four others, including a civilian, got injured who have been shifted to GMC Jammu for treatment.
The Minister informed the House that the whole area has been cordoned off by Army and the security forces and operation is underway as militants have taken refuge in JCO quarters in the area. He said during the operation, Col Rohit Solanki, Havaldar Abdul Hamid and Lance Naik Bahadur Singh and Neha D/O of Subedar Madan Lal Chowdhary got injured who were initially shifted to Military Hospital Satwari and afterwards to Government Medical College, Jammu for treatment.
The Minister said the exact number of Fidayeen is still not known but as per the initial call received at Police Control Room (PCR) Jammu at around 0455 hours this morning, four to five militants are involved in the attack. He said PCR Jammu immediately alerted all the concerned police establishments as well as Civil Administration regarding the incident.
The Minister said authorities at GMC Jammu have been informed to be in readiness to deal with any exigency and ensure best medical care to the injured. Unconfirmed reports say that two children also died in the ongoing encounter.
