Terrorists punctured ceasefire balloon
Major incidents
6/18/2018 11:38:02 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, June 18: 30 days after the Government of India had announced unilateral ceasefire or what it called suspension of "counter-terror operations" in Jammu & Kashmir, the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre on Sunday finally knelt under pressure from the nation and security forces and decided not to extend the ceasefire despite Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti pitching for its continuation for "at least two months".
The decision of the Union Government not to consider Mehbooba Mufti's suggestion came following a high-level meeting presided over by none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Among others, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Union Home Secretary participated in it. While the Centre, on May 16, had announced the suspension of operations in the state and was even considering an extension of the same during Amarnath Yatra "if the situation improved", terrorist activities shoot up within a few days, forcing the Government of India not to consider Mehbooba Mufti's suggestion and revoke its controversial ceasefire order.
What happened during the ceasefire period? As per official statistics, "there were 18 incidents of terror between April 17 to May 17 this year and the figure rose to above 50 during the suspension of operations".
Some of the major terror-related incidents were:
1. Rising Kashmir Editor Shujaat Bukhari was shot dead on June 14 outside his office in Srinagar's Press Enclave. He had advocated and supported ceasefire and was also part of some track-II channels. His two PSOs also lost their lives.
2. An Army rifleman from Rajouri was also obducted the same day from Kalampora area of Pulwama in South Kashmir and his body was later found in Gusoo in Shopian. He was abducted when he was proceeding on leave for Eid.
3. Two policemen were killed, and 12 CRPF personnel were injured in two separate attacks by militants in south Kashmir on June 12. This was worst incident since the unilateral ceasefire was announced by the Centre in the state. In a pre-dawn attack in Pulwama, suspected militants opened fire at a police picket guarding the district court complex, leaving two policemen dead and one injured. The militants took away two Insas rifles after the attack. Not just this, in another attack, at least 10 CRPF personnel were injured when militants lobbed a hand grenade on a CRPF party near Janglat Mandi in Anantnag.
4. On June 11, two suspected militants, who were allegedly behind the theft of an INSAS rifle and ammunition from a police barrack, after a brief gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district were arrested by security forces.
5. On June 10, six terrorists were killed as the Army foiled an infiltration attempt in Keran sector of Kupwara district. According to Defence spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia, these six terrorists, who were attempting to infiltrate, were killed.
6. On June 7, an Army jawan was killed in a militant attack on an Army patrol near the Line of Control in Keran Sector. He was Sepoy Sukhwinder Singh (26). Another jawan sustained bullet injuries during a standoff attack by militants along the LoC in Keran while they were patrolling forward areas ahead of the fence.
7. On June 6, three militants were killed in Machhil sector after security forces foiled an infiltration bid. The same day, a group of terrorists hurled grenades at an Army camp in north Kashmir's Bandipora district.
8. On June 5, twelve civilians and four policemen were injured in a grenade attack by suspected militants in south Kashmir's Shopian. The grenade was hurled at a police vehicle at Batpora chowk, but it missed its target and exploded on the roadside amid civilians.
Besides, 47 people, including 20 security personnel, were killed and over 130 injured in the R S Pura sector in Pakistan shelling and firing this year. Moreover, 35 militants from across LoC have been killed by the Army during the suspension of operations.
