Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 16: The government organizations dealing with food safety standards are out with their annual ritualistic exercise of inspecting sweet shops during festival season.
The Drug and Food Control organization as well as local administrative officials in urban and rural areas of Jammu have started showing their presence by giving wide publicity to their raids on sweet shops during the festival season.
"The adulterated items and milk products have been used in making sweets throughout the province but these organizations never seized these products and during every festival season an impression is created by the department among masses about its active role", sources said, adding that some of the lower rung officials of the department were involved in the entire process and never actually go to check these shops.
A local sweet shop owner claimed that by circulating the news of destroying substandard sweets, a negative impression against the local sweet shops has been created. "The large food chains and multinational companies have been trying their best to penetrate into the traditional local sweets market. So they have been furthering their agenda of launching such raids", the shopkeeper alleged, asking what was the guarantee about the purity of the packaged food products by the companies.
He also alleged that the packed food items as well as sweets were preserved by using preservatives. "These packed food items and sweets are not fresh at all, but by a glittering packing it appears to be fresh, which is a farce", he alleged, adding that these food safety organizations never checked the quality of these products, and ultimately the local shopkeepers have been targeted.
The shopkeepers further said that the health of common man must be of utmost priority of these organizations and raids must be carried out throughout the year, so that adulterated food productions must not be in the market. "But instead of adopting such practice these quality control organizations have been carrying out such ritualistic exercise since years but none question such fake exercises", they added.
