Farooq Abdullah says he wants autonomy within India, not within China or Pakistan
Autonomy means Azadi
2/23/2019 11:52:31 PM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, Feb 23: Kashmir-based "mainstream" leaders are all out to keep the Kashmir pot boiling and create confusion in the minds of the Kashmiri Muslims to promote their own selfish interests and retain control over their constituency in the Valley and broaden it, if possible. On Friday, former J&K CM and NC president Farooq Abdullah said that his party was not demanding "Azadi"; it was demanding "autonomy within India".
"Let me clarify what I think our Azadi would be like. Our Azadi is our autonomy. Where do you think we will go after getting Azadi? Should we go with Pakistan or with China after getting Azadi from India? I believe that we need autonomy within the Constitution of the Indian union. That will be our Azadi and I am always talking of this Azadi. Restoration of autonomy is our right and the government of India has to restore it," he said.
"I don't say you talk only to Hurriyat. Talk to everyone, who matters. My point is why don't they look at the reports of the interlocutors. They (Interlocutors) spoke to everyone. They must have put some suggestions. Justice Saghir also had given some suggestions. Why can't they open up those suggestions? Why can't they restore our autonomy? It was in the Constitution of India. Our autonomy is not outside the constitution of India," he further said.
There is no fundamental difference between Azadi and the kind of autonomy the NC has been demanding since years. Its autonomy means just a step short of complete independence of Jammu & Kashmir from India. It's a statement of fact. If accepted, autonomy to the state would mean withdrawal of all the Central laws and Central institutions, including Supreme Court of India, Comptroller and Auditor-General and Election Commission of India.
It would also mean the abolition of the offices of Governor and Chief Minister and revival of the offices of Sadar-e-Riyasat and Wazir-e-Azam.
Besides, it would mean the revival of committed judiciary and of a regime under which the Council of Ministers will have the power to seize any press and paper saying it has published a seditious article or carried a news item against the government.
But more than that, under the dispensation the NC has been trying to get for the state, the final interpreter of the constitution will the Council of Ministers, and not the High Court of Judicature.
To be more precise, the grant of autonomy of the kind Farooq Abdullah & Co have been demanding would lead to the re-establishment of a local oligarchy in which the people would have no say whatsoever, the Press will have no freedom whatsoever and the ruling elite will enjoy absolute legislative, judicial and executive powers.
Who in India will allow the grant of the type of autonomy which would drive Jammu & Kashmir out of the political and constitutional organization of India and create a Pakistan-like situation in which the minorities would be at the receiving end and have no right whatsoever?
