Tourism Deptt can't absolve itself of deaths during rafting | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 19: The death of two youth one employee of Tourism Department and a private lady while rafting in Lidder river near Pahalgam in Anantnag district has exposed State Tourism Department of lacking technical know how so far as river rafting is concerned. This second incident in last one week. Earlier a youth Rouf Ahmed was killed during rafting while trying to save four visitors whose boat had capiczed during rafting in river Lidder last week. That incident had also put a question mark over the expertise of tourism Department so far as adventure tourism especially rafting is concerned. Yesterday's incident has led to growing public resentment against the Department and people while expressing their anger termed the Tourism Department as killer. Cross section of people from all the three regions of the State have demanded action against erring officers of the Department in allowing rafting without taking all safety measures in advance. The two youth Rinku Raja a tourism Department employee and Sanjna a private girl from Jammu region lost their lives due to sheer negligence of the Department which can't absolve itself by claiming that Raja and Sanjna went for rafting along other eight persons after Department finished rafting for the day and had closed the same said Vinod Pandit, president All Parties Migrant Camp Coordination Committee(APMCCC). Agreeing the version of the Department issued to absolve itself, Pandit said if rafting for day 2as closed why the group was allowed to do rafting after closure. This too shows the failure of Department to respect the rules and regulations. He said does this mean that the people are free to do any thing which they want and Department has no control over the things, he asked? He said who allowed these people to go for rafting after the days work was over. This shows the hollowness of the Department which lacks total infrastructure. Pandita said despite the death of a youth over a week back during rafting in Pahalgam , it seems that Despite death of a youth last week when the people were yet to recover from the shock a gruesome tragedy took place yesterday. Same views we're expressed by Mir Parvez an activist of People's Welfare Society. He demanded a high leveí probe in both the incidents and action under rule against erring officials. |
