Work on Four lanning of Jammu-Srinagar NH going on at slow pace admits Government
Chenani-Nashri Tunnel to be completed by May 2016: JK Govt

JAMMU, Mar 30: The government of Jammu and Kashmir today said that Chenani-Nashri Tunnel that will shorten the Distance between Jammu and Srinagar by nearly 30 Kms will be completed by May next year, while at the same time, the government admitted that the work on four lanning of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was going at snail's pace sighting various reason for the same.
In reply to the listed question of MLA Langate Er. Abdul Rashid wherein the MLA had sought the details pertaining to the present status and the steps contemplated by the government for the completion of four lanning of Jammu Srinagar National Highway, beside the causes of failure in completing the same with special reference to the road stretch from Srinagar to Khannabal within the targeted time frame, the Minister for Roads and Building stated various reason regarding the slow execution of the work on Jammu-Srinagar NH. Minister informed that 95.30% of four lanning of Jammu -Udhampur Stretch, which is the part of Jammu-Srinagar NH has been completed, adding that the same is likely to be completed by September, 2015. He said that 67.88 % of Chenani Nashri tunnel work has been completed and the tunnel will be made functional by May, 2016.
The slow pace of the construction is being witnessed between Banihal-Srinagar and Banihal-Qaziqund section of the NH. As per Minister's reply, only 33.20 % of Banihal - Srinagar stretch has been completed while the rest of the work is likely to be completed by September, 2015, while 30.25% of tunnel portion of Banihal to Qazigund stretch has been completed and the same is likely to be finished by June, 2016.
The government claims that the tenders for the stretches from Udhampur to Chenani, Nashri to Ramban & Banihal to Ramban have been received by the executing agency National Highway Authority of India at its Headquarters and are presently under evaluation. It assured that the works for the same will be awarded very soon and added that a completion period of 3 years for Udhampur - Chenani and Nashri-Ramban stretch and three and a half years for Ramban-Banihal stretch is prescribed from the date of commencement.
The government stated that The construction works of four lanning of Srinagar-Qazigund stretch of National Highway with special reference to Srinagar - Khanabal has been delayed primarily due to land acquisition issues, floods and inadequate mobilization of funds by Concessionaire, adding that all out efforts are being made to remove the bottlenecks on Srinagar- Qazigund stretch of NH with a view to accelerate the pace of works. The government has also constituted a high level project monitoring committee which will monitor the progress of the road regularly on monthly basis.
