Srinagar, Sept 21: With the authorities making Dachigam National Park 'out of bounds' for visiting tourists, the claims of state government of promoting tourism in the state fall flat as the decision has hit tourism very hard.
The decision of closing down the National park on 15th of August this year has irked the local tour and travel operators who say their tour itineraries have been disturbed and most of the tourists return disappointed. "We have nothing for the entertainment of tourists here rather than
the lush green meadows, mountains and particularly Dachigam National Park which is favorite destination of tourists," Manzoor Sadiq who heads All Kashmir Tour and Travel Agents Association told Early Times.
He said that the decision of wildlife department is hitting the tourism sector and travel agents are the worst victims. "Business of tour and travel agents totally depends upon tour itineraries but closure of the National park has disturbed their tour itineraries," he added.
Manzoor who was recently elected as the president of All Kashmir Tour and Travel Agents Association says that Dachigam National Park is only destination which enthralls the visiting tourists. "We sell mountains, rivers, lush green meadows. Here is nothing for the tourists which can entertain them barring National park but unfortunately the wildlife department has closed it for the tourists," he said.
He asked Wildlife department to reopen the National park ahead of the Puja holidays. "This year one part of the tourism season that is Puja holidays is offing so we urge wildlife department to reopen the park as soon as possible," he said, adding they were not intimated well in advance about the closer of the park. Manzoor said that many tour and travel agents who have mentioned the
Dachigam National Park in their tour schedules have to face the
clients now because of the decision. "We will also raise the issue with the concerned departments on priority," he added. Know Tour and Travel agent, Nazir Ahmad Bakshi, opined that wildlife
department should have kept open a particularly area for the visiting tourists.
"They should have shutdown the Darfhama area that is very important but rest of the area up to trout hatchery should have been kept open the tourists," Bakshi opined.
He termed the decision of wildlife department of closing National park for tourists bad. "We agree that conservation is important for the survival of captive wild animals but at the same time survival of
people affiliated with the tourism sector should have been take care of," he said,
However, Abdul Rauf, Wildlife Warden, Dachigam National Park when contacted said the park has been closed temporarily. "There was heavy rush of locals tourists and they were damaging the park after which we closed the park so that we can minimize the rush," he said.
"You can't believe visiting youngsters were plucking fruits meant for bear," he said, adding park was closed keeping into consideration the welfare of the animals.
