After a long dry spell this winter, Kashmir valley has witnessed heavy snowfall. The heavy snowfall will have a positive impact on agriculture, and horticulture in the state as the water level in the rivers, lakes and streams is going to increase drastically. The increased water level in Chenab, Jehlum, Sindh and other rivers will also increase and this will help in the power generation capacity of the hydroelectric power projects operational in our state as well. The snowfall which indeed has positive impact, on the other hand has also added to the hardships of the people as the snow has not been properly cleared. In many areas the JCBs and snow clearance machines have just compressed the snow instead of removing it. "The compressed snow which has become very hard due to dip in night temperatures . These roads are very much icy and vehicles are not able to move as the roads are very slippery" Farooq Ahmad of Dara Harwan
"Why cannot the department of Rural Development be also roped in and got involved in the operation snow clearance? We have an important centrally sponsored scheme Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act ( Scheme) (MG NREGA) and the snow clearance work should be undertaken under this scheme as well" said Mushtaq Ahmad Lone of Bonen Chadoora
