Now SKUAST Kashmir faculty questions NIA, defends Geelani's son
9/23/2017 11:01:18 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 23: In brazen violation of service conduct rules, the faculty at SK University of Agricultural Science and Technology (SKUAST) Kashmir has openly dared to question the National Investigative Agency only to support their colleague Naseem Geelani, son of senior separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani, allegedly linked to hawala money.
Sensing trouble in the wake of NIA questioning Naseem for his alleged links with "terror funding case", his colleagues have surprisingly came up in his support in open.
A handout said in an emergency meeting of SKUAST-K Scientists and Teachers Association (SSTA), Shalimar Campus held here this week, the forum "urged the state chief minister and home minister of India not to implicate their scientists arbitrarily."
The forum, as per a handout said it was "up in arms against arbitrary quizzing" of Naseem Geelani, who is a Senior Scientist Faculty of Forestry, SKUAST-Kashmir.
"Arbitrary summoning and quizzing of Dr Geelani amounts to harassment and mental torture of such a scientist of repute besides affecting the university academics," the forum said in the statement.
"We have already made it clear that we are not opposing the enquiry conducted by National Investigation Agency (NIA) but the quizzing should be as per law and to the minimum disadvantage of the scientist and the university" the forum said.
Dr Naseem Geelani, according to the SSTA: "Is a well-known Scientist serving SKUAST-K and has served as General Secretary of the association (SSTA)."
"Besides he is contributing a lot in the field of teaching, research and guidance to the students.
The SKAUST wants that Naseem be questioned only in Kashmir. He has attended the NIA, New Delhi twice and has attended two rounds of questioning starting from 8th of August, 2017 to 11th of August, 2017 and 2nd round from 24th of August, 2017 to 30th of August, 2017. Now he is being called again on 25th of September, 2017 to NIA headquarters, New Delhi. The time of Scientist is very precious and by frequent calling to New Delhi, a lot of time is involved in this process and by these means the Scientist is losing the opportunities in his teaching, research and other academic activities which are going to affect his career besides the academic activities of the university in a very worst manner," the statement said.
Despite repeated attempts the forum, which issued the statement couldn't be contacted for comments.
But a senior official said it could not be ruled out if the SKUAST faculty was provoked by the separatist lobby to come out with such a statement.
"See the irony is that this forum has defended a man whose father doesn't want any Kashmiri youth to be scientist but wants them to be stone pelters or militants," the official said.
