PDP leader undertakes illegal construction near highway, admin silent
'He is godfather of administration, we cannot question him'

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 13: In brazen violation of Master Plan for Srinagar, a senior leader of the ruing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has illegally undertaken construction to extend his villa in posh Hyderpora locality here.
The fresh construction, which is around 1500 sq feet, has been undertaken just next to the existing villa, with no fire-gap towards the busy motorway outside, near highway.
The concrete construction, which is on for the past over a month, saw the enforcement staff of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) frequently visiting the site with only one question: "Sahib Ji, if you need any help from our side kindly feel free to tell us, we are at your service."
The area locals said instead of acting against the illegal construction, the SMC has been taking side with the PDP leader.
"Through construction along the main road, which is violation of the Ribbon Development Act, this neta has ended scope of any road widening in the area. How can a lawmaker be so lawless?" the concerned citizens of Hyderpora told Early Times.
While the three floor structure has been completed, presently tile work is being done to decorate the façade.
The residents said the authorities were resorting to favoritism. "While a poor man's construction is sealed by the SMC, netaji is allowed to take law into his own hands," the locals said.
A senior official in the enforcement wing of the SMC ruled out having taken any bribe from the PDP leader. "He used to be union leader of government employees at one point of time. He is our godfather. We have not taken even a penny from him. Instead we often asked him if he needs any services from us," the official said on the condition of anonimity.
Insiders alleged that the chief enforcement officer of the SMC wants to keep ruling politicians in good humor for personal reasons. "Basically he has been elevated as the chief enforcement officer despite having been arrested by Vigilance in a case of corruption in 2014. Actually such an officer shouldn't have been given the sensitive post, but he was given only because he enjoys political patronage," the SMC staffers said.
When contacted a senior SMC official said there were political pressures because of which the construction was allowed. "Actually there are some cases where we have to be silent in the interest of governance," said the official on the condition of anonymity.
The official said the neta has been told that incase of any hue and cry he should tell the concerned that the new construction would accommodate his "personal security and office of the PDP."
Despite repeated attempts the neta couldn't be contacted for comments.
