Comm SMC directs suspension of official
Denial of info about property statement
1/12/2018 10:17:47 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 12: Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has directed suspension of a municipal official who is in-charge of property statements of municipal employees. The official was found involved in withholding the information until the employee (ward officer) retired from service . Information seeker had been seeking information under RTI about the ward officer and Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) had also directed the SMC to reveal the same. Commissioner SMC on Thursday directed the Joint Commissioner (Adm) to place the official under suspension for making unnecessary delay in providing the information.
Details available with Early Times reveal that Commissioner SMC had to hold an inquiry into the latest property statement of a Ward Officer who is now retired. The said statement as reported already by Early Times has allegedly been destroyed by the officer when the same was sought under RTI Act by an information seeker. Sources in SMC have told Early Times that no officer in SMC has submitted correct property statement and majority of the officers of the corporation have amassed huge wealth disproportionate to their known source of income.
Pertinently, most of the officers of SMC, right from Building Inspectors , Sanitation Inspectors , Ward Officers , Sanitation Officers , Revenue Officers , Transport Officers and Enforcement Officers , all have either failed to submit the annual property returns before the Corporation or have filed misleading of incorrect property statements.
Secretary of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) who is also the designated Public Information Officer (PIO) under J&K RTI Act 2009 , had told State Information Commission (SIC) that latest Property Statement submitted by a Ward Officer of the Corporation is missing from the records of the SMC. The copy of said statement was sought under RTI Act by an information seeker namely Firdous Ahmad a resident of Gulberg colony Hyderpora Srinagar. Firdous alleges that the ward officer (retired recently) had amassed wealth disproportionate to the known source of his income. CIC Khurshid Ahmad Ganai had directed several months back SMC Commissioner to hold an inquiry into this issue, but Dr Shafaqat Khan the then Commissioner has sat on the CIC's order.
"The CIC had directed Commissioner SMC to hold an inquiry almost 5 months back , but Dr Shafqat Khan ex Commissioner sat on the CIC's order. I appeal Commissioner SMC Riyaz Ahmad Wani to direct Commissioner SMC to make public property statements of all officers of SMC public through SMC website" said Fayaz Ahmad an employee of SMC while talking to Early Times
