Despite intelligence inputs, police caught napping on Karan Nagar attack
2/12/2018 10:54:19 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 12: Despite having intelligence inputs that militants were likely to strike paramilitary CRPF camp at Karan Nagar, the local police was caught napping till the suicide squad appeared in the area Monday morning.
Official sources said for the past three months, there were credible inputs that the Fidayeen squads of militants were planning to strike paramilitary camps particularly in Karan Nagar area, where many such camps exist.
But the police seem to have failed to take preventive measures. Sources said despite the recent shootout at nearby SMHS Hospital on February 6 when two policemen were killed and a militant managed to flee, the police failed to improve security in the sensitive area.
"There was a need to have nakas in place along all the sensitive roads in the area but the police failed to act as all such sensitive points were void of vigil," said a source in the paramilitary forces.
Sources said there were recommendations that the police and the CRPF should jointly plan vigil operations in the area. "What was actually needed was to have a day and night vigil through special nakas and mobile bunkers in the area but the main point is that no such arrangements were in place," the sources said.
The sources said as per the inputs there was a possibility that the militants would attack the area in the late hours. "By virtue of this input, the night vigil should have been highest but there was no such preparedness till the militants showed up early this morning," said a senior official.
He said had the police been on tight vigil the militants would not have managed to reach the spot. "The best way to avoid fidayeen attacks is to keep deterrents enroute, something which means that multi layer security grid should be in place so that the attackers are neutralized much before they make it to the nefarious designs," said a CRPF officer, on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said the central government was likely to call for a high level inquiry into the sudden surge in Fidayeen attacks in the state.
