Militants take refuge in abandoned house, CRPF jawan killed
Gunfight rages in Karan Nagar area of Srinagar city

SRINAGAR, Feb 12: A jawan of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was killed while as a policeman sustained grievous injuries during an encounter with militants in the Karan Nagar area of summer capital.
The encounter started after militants took shelter in an abandoned house in the area. The fire fight was going on when last reports came in. Reinforcement has been sent to the area to flush out the militants at least two in the number from the house where they are hiding.
Reports said that the militants tried to storm the building housing the 23rd battalion of CRPF located in the Karan Nagar area. However, their attempt to enter the building was foiled following which they took shelter in an abandoned house. This was followed by a gunfight between the two sides.
A CRPF officer said that a jawan of the force noticed the movement of militants near the camp in the early hours today. The alert jawan foiled the attempt of militants to sneak and as such the attack was repulsed, said the officer. The slain CRPF official has been identified as constable Mujahid Khan.
"As the militants were cornered by the alert sentry they took refuge in the nearby house. Following this the militants fired upon our jawans and the same was retaliated. The firing is going on and one of our jawans has achieved martyrdom. We are on the job and the militants would be neutralized," said the CRPF officer.
As the gunfight was going on the CRPF and police jawans swiftly managed the evacuation of the civilians including women and children from the site of encounter. These civilians had been trapped and could not move out due to the firing of bullets from both sides.
In the afternoon army personnel were rushed to the area along with the armoured vehicles to flush out the militants hiding in the abandoned house. The firing was going on when last reports came in. Some of the reports said that loud blasts were heard in the area late in the evening. The gunfight led to chaos and confusion among the residents of Karan Nagar, Balgarden, Batmaloo, Kaka Sarie and adjacent areas.
The Karan Nagar area is strategically located with some of the important establishments located in its vicinity. Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, office of Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Srinagar, National School and Caset School are located in the Karan Nagar area in close vicinity of the area where the encounter is going on. The area is located just a kilometer away from the Civil Secretariat, Srinagar.
Meanwhile, a group of youth pelted stones on police and CRPF personnel at Kaka Sarie Chowk while the encounter was going on in the Karan Nagar area. The stone pelters were chased by the security forces personnel.
