Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 14: Fire and Emergency Services, Jammu and Kashmir observed Fire Service Day today to remember and pay homage to the martyrs of the Services in the country who have laid down their lives while saving life and property of the masses. The main function was held at Fire & Emergency Services Headquarter Gandhi Nagar Jammu in which R K Hak, Director Fire and Emergency Services J&K was the chief guest. Wreaths were laid on the memorial in memory of the gallant firemen who laid their lives for the noble cause, "We Serve to save". On the occasion, a two minute's silence was observed.
While speaking on the occasion, R K Hak, emphasized the importance of Fire Service Day and Fire Service Week, which commences today. He recalled the most horrific incident of 1944 when on April 11, a ship namely "S S Fort Stikine" carrying explosives, started its journey from Lahore to Bombay and on reaching Bombay Victoria Docks Port on April 12 in the evening, during the night hours the ship was engulfed in a devastating fire. The entire Fire Service crew from Bombay Fire Services consisting of 66 officials tried their best but could not save anything and lost their lives during fire fighting. Since then 14th April is observed as "Martyrs Day" to pay homage to all those gallant personnel.
Hak, elaborating on this year's slogan "Fire Loss is National Loss - Let Us Adopt Fire Safety Measures" stressed upon the officers and jawans of the department to play their role in nation's development by launching massive awareness programmes in schools, colleges and industries to inculcate fire preventive and safety measures to minimize the losses.
