Army porter killed in cross border shelling, another injured in accidental fire

BARAMULLA, Apr 16: An army porter was killed on Monday in cross-border shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri, while as another army personnel got injured in an accidental fire in north Kashmir district.
An official said that Khursheed Ahmad (37) son of Mohammad Sharif of Nawa Runda who was working as a porter with army 4 Madras unit, received a bullet injury in the neck and some grenade splinters in both legs near Chaukas fired by the Pakistani army.
Khursheed suffered multiple serious wounds in the incident and died on the spot, the officer said.
A police party from police post Uroosa deputed to the spot for further necessary action, the officer said.
However sources told early times that the deceased was working as Porter with army 4 Madras unit got bullet injuries near chaukas area in Uri sector and died on spot.
It is pertinent to mention here that on Feb 24, the armies of India and Pakistan had exchanged artillery shelling and firing in Hajipeer and Churanda areas of Uri sector.
Sources said that around two months back there was an artillery fire and mortar shelling in Hajipeer and Churanda area of Uri Sector.
Almost 35 families of Salikote, Tilawari and its adjacent areas of Uri sector were shifted to the safer places, as some of the houses had got partially damaged and since then there was no firing from both the sides till yesterday, said sources.
Meanwhile sources from Kupwara said that an army officer was critically injured on Monday after his service rifle went off accidentally in Kandi forest area of north Kashmir's Kupwara district.
A police official said that the Captain VK Sahu of 47 RR posted at Keegam received bullet injury in the incident while he was performing his duty at Kandi.
The seriously injured trooper was immediately shifted to Drugmulla military hospital for advanced treatment where his condition is said to be stable.
