Under pressure, BJP taking a U-turn
4/20/2018 11:52:29 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 20: The alleged Rassana rape and murder case is making the position of the BJP, which is sharing power with the PDP since May 2015, untenable with each passing moment. While the PDP, which is leading the coalition, as also movement for justice for the victim, the BJP has not been able to take a clear-cut stand on the issue that has snowballed into a major controversy at the national level and further sharpened regional tensions and angularities with the people of Jammu insisting on a CBI probe.
People of Jammu are saying they have no faith in the Crime Branch, which prepared the charge-sheet. On the other hand, people of Kashmir and all those who matter in Kashmir, including the ruling PDP, hailing the Crime Branch as well as its charge-sheet and demanding disposal of the case within three months and death sentence for those arrested in the Rassana case.
On Thursday, the under-pressure BJP took a huge U-turn and said that the media and the opposition wrongly projected the "rape case". The BJP, in fact, saw "a bigger conspiracy" hatched outside India calculated to set on fire the already-troubled J&K state. Obviously, the BJP also didn't spare its coalition partner. It bears recalling that on February 16 the PDP had said that "rapist" had been arrested. It didn't say that an alleged rapist was arrested. As a matter of fact the PDP that day acted as a thief-catcher and as a judge.
The stand the BJP took was inconsistent with the stand its ally PDP adopted on day one. So much so, it hailed the Prime Minister, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP national president Amit Shah and BJP national general secretary and in-charge J&K Ram Mashav for their decision to sack two BJP ministers who had participated in the anti-government rally at Kootah in Hiranagar.
The BJP on Thursday sought to show the PDP its pace by saying that Lal Singh and CP Ganga had not committed any crime by visiting Kootah and that they had resigned on moral grounds. However, the BJP said that it was for the Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, to explain as to why she presided over two Cabinet meetings in which Lal Singh and CP Ganga were also present after they had already visited Kootah and shared the dais with Hindu Ekta Manch leaders at Kootah.
Significantly, on April 15 the PDP had gone to extent of passing a resolution that thanked the people of the country and the media for their -- what it called -- "positive support" to the victim's family and for the media coverage of the episode.
It is quite clear that the BJP is under tremendous pressure. That's the reason it is trying to tell the people that its approach and the PDP's approach to the Rassana episode is altogether different. It is however a different story that no one in Jammu and elsewhere in the country is buying the arguments put forth by the BJP leaders to convince the people.
