More than 110 livestock killed in hailstorm, cloudburst

Jammu, May 8: In a major hailstorm preceded by heavy rainfall in Thanamandi area of Rajouri more than 110 animals were reported dead and huge loss inflicted to public infrastructure. The road was also blocked due to natural calamity.
Ten families of nomadic Bakkerwals on move to higher reaches were trapped wherein 110 sheep and goats were killed however no loss of human life or injury was reported.
These included families of Mohd Farooq son of Abdullah, Mohd Aslam and Mohd Bashir both son of Sain , Mohd Zubair son of Babu, Kamma son of Mohd Yaqoob, Mohd Yasin son of Sain, Kalam Din son of Mohd Yaqoob, Mohd Taris son of Mod Sharief, Mohd Iqbal son of Mohd Yaisn and Mohd Yaseen son of Sain Mohd all residents of Androoth.
A massive rescue operation was launched by authorities in the sub-division and a team headed by SDPO Thanamandi, Iftkhar Choudhary rushed to the spot along with men and machinery and cleared a long stretch of road in Manyal area while hectic efforts were made to clear debris in Rajdhani area where a cloudburst was reported.
SDM Thanamandi, Afzal Mirza and Tehsildar Qadeer Rehman along with staff also reached the spot for rescue operation
Local people in Thanamandi extended a lot of help and assistance for timely rescue and clearance of road. BRO Team comprised of 3 machines and 20 men was also rushed to spot for clearance road. The police teams lead by SDPO coordinated for rescue of trapped livestock while another team of Sheep Husbandry reached spot for treatment of injured livestock and formulation of relief cases for animals died due to natural calamity.
Officer Commanding, 58 RCC, Prakash Varshney and Executive Engineer Neeraj Kumar also reached the spot and additional resources were requisitioned from headquarters.
Police said that hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the road due to accumulation of debris leading to blockade of road. At many places the hail accumulated upto 3 Feet and more. Rescue operation is going on for early clearance of road however road has been partly cleared for movement of traffic.
DC Rajouri, Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary rushed team for assessment of losses enabling relief and compensation. An immediate amount of Rs 3 lakh was sanctioned for assistance to affected families. DC and SSP Yougal Manhas coordinated the arrangement for resources mobilisation.
Loss of more livestock, poultry farms and private property has also been reported however assessment could not be completed due to dark. Power infrastructure was damaged in Rajdhani, Thanamandi and Manyal area.
