Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, May 17: Irked by the state government's stubborn attitude towards their demands, the Anganwadi Workers and Helpers of Udhampur district on Thursday blocked the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NHW) near Military Hospital Chowk for more than one hour leading to a traffic jam.
Drawn in large numbers from various ICDS projects of Udhampur district, the Anganwadi Workers and Helpers gathered at Milltary Hospital Chowk under the banner of "Anganwadi Workers & Helpers Union, Jammu & Kashmir," and held massive protest demonstration to press for their long pending demands including hike in their honorarium.
The protest demonstration of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers was addressed by several union leaders. Speaking on the occasion union leader Shriti Sharma said that they are on strike for the last 104 days in support of their demands but state government has turned deaf ears towards their demands.
She added that they constitute a 100% women workforce and they are being used as bonded labours, as their services are being utilized for implementation of various Centrally Sponsored Programmes by various departments in addition to the duties under ICDS.
Speakers said that they are the worst victims of gender based exploitation as the minimum wage per day fixed by the central government even for unskilled temporary labour is Rs 225 per day which is about twice as much the honorarium being paid to Anganwadi Workers and four times the honorarium being paid to helpers per day.
