NHM organizes workshop on breast cancer

Jammu, June 23: A one day workshop on breast cancer "Early Detection & Referring to Right Centre" was organized by National Health Mission, J&K in collaboration with Biocon Ltd, Bangalore and AHA Regional Chapter Jammu, at Hotel Lords INN.
Dr Yashpal Sharma, Mission Director, NHM, J&K while inaugurating the workshop, welcomed the participants and highlighted the objectives of the workshop. He said that Breast Cancer is the second most common cancer in the world and most frequent cancer in women with an estimate of 25% of new cases diagnosed of all cancers every year with an increase in incidence in younger age group also.
There is need of early detection of cancer for which he emphasized screening at the primary level and referral of suspected cases to secondary and tertiary care for diagnosis and treatment. Primary Health Care is limited to Reproductive Child Health & Communicable diseases which address only 20% of the health care need.
Dr. Pawan Malhotra, Director ASCOMS while addressed the participants, appreciated the efforts of National Health Mission in providing health care facilities to common people from primary to tertiary level.
Dr. Mohd. Shafi Koka, State Nodal Officer, NHM, J&K while addressing the participants in the valedictory session thanked Sandeep Mohan, Associate Director, Biocon Ltd, Bangalore along with his team and Academy of Hospital Administration, Regional Chapter, Jammu, for their support in organizing the workshop in the State.
Dr. Sunil Gupta, Medical Oncologist, Venkteshwara Hospital, New Delhi, Dr. Vikas Roshan, Radiation Oncologist Narayana Hrudayalaya, Super Speciality Hospital and Dr. Deepak Abrol, Deptt. Of Radiotherapy, GMC, Jammu were among the experts.
The workshop was attended by Dr. Harjeet Rai, Divisional Nodal Officer, NHM, Jammu; Dr. Narinder Bhatial, Programme Manager, NHM, J&K; Medical Superintendents, Senior Consultants of various Specialties (Gynecology, Surgery, Medicine), Medical Officers, Staff Nurses of District Hospitals, along with Divisional Nodal Officer, NCD Cell, Jammu, Officers/ Officials from District NCD Cell, the Officers from State Health Society, NHM, J&K.
