Sahai likely to assume command of State Police
6/23/2018 11:19:24 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, June 23: With reports of Home Ministry's nod to the repatriation of Shiv Murari Sahai back to the state as the Director General of Police, it would be an appropriate time that the officer shall be deputed to undertake a damage control exercise in Kashmir.
Sahai's return is being seen as a poetic justice of sorts after he became victim of the political conspiracy hatched by certain Ministers of Mehbooba Cabinet who did not want him to be elevated as the DG of the state police.
It has been reliably learnt that in the situation arising following collapse of the PDP-BJP coalition government and the imposition of Governor's rule, Center is looking forward to an all new approach to counter challenges of security and law and order in Kashmir and for this, the state government has sought the recall of SM Sahai.
Sahai is accredited to have had controlled the situation in Kashmir as IGP during which he managed to keep a tab on the separatist leadership as well as the militancy. A staunch nationalist, he is known to stand erect under political pressure. Before his last ouster from the state conspired in the aftermath of killing of Burhan Wani, he was also targeted by Omar Abdullah for refusing to buckle under political pressure. He earned the wrath of former CM when he stood by an SP ranked officer of the state police, who was sacked by him.
Sahai is also known to have a knack for working in close coordination with other agencies and enjoys a great deal of trust and respect from them. Besides, Sahai is also a confidant of the Governor N N Vohra, who has deputed him in critical situations. It may be recalled that following outbreak of communal tension in Baltal during the Amarnath Yatra the previous year, Governor had deputed him to defuse the situation. Sahai, who was officiating DGP at that time had managed to nip the issue in the bud that could have had huge ramifications across the country.
It is pertinent to mention that even when Mehbooba Mufti took over as the CM, Sahai was tipped to be the DGP, but he was unceremoniously dispatched on central deputation, when during a press conference following Burhan Wani's elimination, he told the reporters that the CM had been informed in advance about the operation.
