Early Times Report

Vijaypur, July 18: Blame it on the apathetic attitude of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department Samba and the local administration for not constructing around 15 kms long bund along Rakh Barotia to Keso, Kamore villages that hundreds of kanals of land was washed away in floods and large chunk of land became unfertile.
Sources told Early Times that the farmers of many villages dwelling along the river of Devika and Basanter at Tehsil Ramgarh have been facing huge difficulties due to floods threat every year and in absence of the bund along the river, the fertile land was washed away and thousands of kanals of land could not be used for cultivation due to sand which entered in their fields which made the land infertile.
"The affected villages including Keso, Kamore Camp, Brota, Forward Ditch Line Tehsil Ramgarh which are dwelling along flood river. A project of construction of bund of 15-20 kms length was sanctioned five years ago at the cost of Rs 50 crore but the construction work of Bund had hardly started when it was stopped due to unknown reason," they said further adding that the Irrigation and Flood Control Department could only construct bund up to length of 950 meters by spending Rs 5 Cr in four years.
They further said that out of Rs 50 Cr, the Rs 7 Cr work was allotted to BSF and Rs 1 Cr had to spend by DDC office Samba while the rest Rs 42 Cr of work had to compete by I&FC Department which it failed to do.
When contacted Executive Engineer I&FC Department Samba said that he had recently joined office and said that the department had no funds for the construction of the Bund, moreover, the liability of contractors for the work has not been cleared as yet.
Meanwhile, the farmers whose land was washed away alleged that the local leaders as well as the administration gave hollow assurances but nothing happened. They further alleged that Government played horrific joke with them while paying compensation as they were paid Rs 200 per kanals as compensation.
