Jammu, Aug 14: An overstaying engineer in the Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) has made a fortune by misusing his official position.
According to insiders in the ERA, the engineer has been staying there for last 10 years on the same position. "He has been involved in various scandals, and the ERA's higher authorities are aware about his misdeeds", said the insiders, adding that the engineer in questioned has played an important role in the Non-Revenue Water (NRW) project.
"In the project, the engineer allegedly made contract agreement at very exorbitant rates with the blessings of some senior officers", the sources said and added that the consultant agency covered up the wrongs committed in the project.
Sources said substandard material was purchased for the project. "The detail project report (DPR) was made by the same tainted engineer. It is shocking to know that bill forms were produced for branded material, but substandard material was purchased", said the sources, adding that the NRW project was funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Sources said that in another project the same engineer again accumulated huge wealth by misusing his position. "In replacement of machinery, the project was delayed due to poor performance of executing team. Then the ERA handed over this project to its blue-eyed engineer", said sources, adding that substandard material was passed on to PHE department.
"Several officials of PHE were also involved in the fraud", sources said. |
