Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 21: Despite large population of the state suffering from dental ailments, government has been ignoring dentistry and focusing on only creating new Government Medical Colleges in the State while hundreds of unemployed Bachelor of Dental Surgeons (BDS) were bearing brunt of Government's apathy.
Sources told Early Times that no post of dental surgeon has been advertised by the government during last ten years leaving many trained dentists unemployed.
"Despite knowing the fact that the need of dental care and its awareness has become important due to changing life style which has been affecting oral health of the today's generation, no dental service has been provided in primary health services. The rural population is more affected with oral diseases but Government is giving its total attention on creating new medical colleges and ignoring this important aspect of health care. The issue was put up before the Governor and he directed the Finance Department to find out ways to absorb the unemployed BDS but it has been more than two years since the matter is pending with Finance Department and undue delay is diminishing the hope of qualified professional youth.
Although these dejected unemployed youth lodged number of protests to fight for their rights but government has been paying no heed towards the plights of the unemployed BDS.
The unemployed dentists alleged that despite qualifying the same entrance test, the BDS are considered less important than MBBS. They said that there was need of dentists in the Primary Health Centers across the state where large number of patients were suffering from dental ailments, but government was not alive to the situation.
