Jammu, Sept 1: The tall claims of incumbent as well as previous governments of providing social security to the people of the State have totally deflated with the pendency of over 95,000 applications for pensions in various categories lying with the Social Welfare Department as the periodic revision of target has not been conducted since 2014.
Sources told Early Times that in Jammu Province, there are 13,035 applications pending for sanction in the District Social Welfare Offices under widow pension schemes including 2,689 under National Social Assistance Programme and 10,346 under Integrated Social Security Scheme and the pendency is piling up with each passing day.
"Earlier After the revision of target under Widow Pension Scheme during the year 2014, the target was revised from 2,306 to 3,387 but shockingly after 2014, no target was revised however the new cases are being sanctioned against the weeded out. Although the issue of pending cases for sanction under Widow Pension Scheme is already under consideration of Administrative Department but nothing has happened till date to clear the pendency so as to give some relief to the aspirants," they informed.
Besides, there are 82,736 numbers of applications pending for sanction in the District Social Welfare Offices under Old Age and Handicapped pension schemes and out of which 36, 523 applications are under Integrated Social Security Scheme, they said further adding that there was a demand of giving preference to the widow pension cases over Old Age and Handicapped pension cases by several social organisations but the issue was not given due consideration despite the fact that the widows are the most destitute lot amongst the other in the society, they said.
