National Nutrition Month starts at KVK Poonch

POONCH, Aug 6: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Poonch of Sher-e-Kashmir Universit concluded National Nutrition Week at KVK Poonch campus in collaboration with Mission Directorate ICDS, District Poonch.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Ajay Gupta I/c. Sr. Scientist & Head informed that KVK is going to observe September 2018 as the National Nutrition Month to mark the country's fight against malnutrition as announced by Union Ministry of Women and Child Development. The month-long intensive campaign will be undertaken with message of nutrition - 'har ghar poshan tyohar'. He said that the objective of the programme was to create awareness about the importance of nutrition for good health which has far-reaching implications on economic growth and National Development. Speaking about the problem of malnutrition in India, he said that as per NFHS-IV data, India scored fairly low on nutrition index with about 42.8 % children under the age of 5 are reported underweight and 42 % of children under 5 are stunted and another 9.2 % of children under 5 are severely wasted. Dr. Ajay Gupta also spoke on the importance of pulses and millets in human diet for balanced nutrition. The programme was attended by more than fifty anganwari workers of Block Haveli. In this programme, participating Supervisors and Anganwari workers of ICDS Poonch gave lectures on Integrated Nutrition diet for women, recipes of pregnant and lactating women, and importance of breastfeeding, high nutrition food for young women and children and National Nutrition programmes in India. Dr. Muzaffar Mir, SMS Fruit Science on this occasion highlighted the need for sensitizing rural and household women regarding importance of nutritional food, vegetables and fruits in human diet. He informed that malnutrition is a serious problem in Poonch District among adolescent girls, pregnant women and children. The programme ended with the vote of thanks presented by Dr. Muneeshwar Sharma, SMS Plant Protection.
