Early Times Report
Udhampur, Sept 7: In the Year 2012, the Transport Commissioner directed the commercial drivers and conductors to wear uniform while carrying out their job in both the rural and urban areas of Jammu and Kashmir but the order has been observed in breach.
The commissioner had further directed the drivers to display their names and driving lucence number orominently on the vehicle. This also remained confined to papers.
The udea was to establish identity of drivers and conductors in case of accidents and in cases of harassment or misbehaviour with the passengers.
Its seems that Motor Vehicle Department Udhampur have no time to implement the order. Drivers and conductors of the commercial vehicles are flouting the rule with impunity in Udhampur and hardly a driver or conductor is seen wearing the prescribed dress .
Transport Department issued directions under Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 (Section 177), making it mandatory for drivers and conductors of commercial vehicles to wear khaki shirts and trousers. In the order it was also mentioned that stern action would be taken against the violators and it would be ensured that dress code is adhered to by the drivers and conductors.
Talking to the Early times Number of citizens of Udhampur said that Traffic Police rarely asks for the dress code.
