PDP, NC blackmailing Centre to prove their relevance
9/7/2018 11:40:23 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 7: Two Kashmir based parties National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party have got a chance to blackmail New Delhi by announcing that they won't participate in the forthcoming polls for Urban Local Bodies and Panchayats.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said that NC and PDP have got a chance to prove their relevance. "By refusing to contest the forthcoming polls these parties are trying to prove it to the Centre that J&K cannot be run without their participation," he added.
It may be recalled that soon after these polls were announced National Conference had welcomed the decision and had asked the people to come forward to participate in the polls. However, the NC had afterthoughts and the party changed its track and tone.
Soon after the NC announced its decision to stay away from polls, the Peoples Democratic Party also toed the same line. "Both the parties know it very well that Panchayat polls are contested on non-partisan basis and it's not necessary for the candidates to declare their political affiliation with any party to contest the elections," the analyst said.
A Kashmir watcher said that NC and PDP throwing tantrums just before these polls should serve as an eye-opener for the people sitting in New Delhi. "The Centre has been grooming these parties for the past seven decades and has provided them with all the privileges. At this point of time New Delhi needs them but they have started black mailing the Centre just to express their resentment against them being thrown out of the power. Both PDP and NC want to remain in power so that they can rule the state. Out of power they are showing their true colours," he added.
A politician said that Kashmir based parties know it very well that they have lost the ground and they cannot approach the people to seek votes. The PDP and NC MLAs are no more relevant as they have not visited their constituencies since 2015 when the PDP-BJP government was formed. "To save themselves from defeat NC and PDP are claiming that situation is not conducive for polls. They are trying to take refuge behind Article 35A to save themselves from embarrassment," the politician added.
He said that there is every possibility about both the parties giving mandate to proxy candidates to test the waters. "The poll boycott drama seems to be aimed at appeasing the separatists and the people sitting across the Line of Control," the politician added.
