Early Times Report
Kathua, Sept 12.:- Defunct Irrigation machinery for the last 8 years has been jeopardizing irrigation of over 103 acres land in Kathua district and resulting in poor yields and the department concerned has been in deep slumber.
Poor cultivation of crops today triggered a massive protest demonstration at Bobiya village situated at Zero line against the lackadaisical approach of the mechanical wing of irrigation department.
Tirth Singh Naib Sarpanch of Bobiya Panchayat, informed that the Lift Power Project started in 1980, but after functioning for few years it got defunct. He informed that eight years since its break down, no body from Mechanical division bothered to get the same repaired and as a result over 103 acre land turned barren.
He further informed that not only this project got defunct due to negligence on the part of irrigation ( Mechanical wing) department but several other water projects are lying defunct. Bharat Bhushan Sarpanch Bobiya panchayat pointed out that the employees of the department were lethargic and corrupt and were not concerned about the issues of the public. He regretted that due to their indifferent attitude, farmers are suffering despite several welfare schemes of the union goverment. People demanded restoration of defunct machinery of Lift Project and other water projects along international border so that the farmers whose livelihood depended upon irrigation project could get respite. When approached, SDM Hiranagar ensured to take up the matter with concerned department and restore the defunct machinery. AEE ( Civil wing) however informed that the department did not have sufficient funds to repair the machinery but the department will include the requisite fund in next proposal to restore the defunct machinery.
