| Municipal polls: JK Cong leaders called to Delhi | | | Saahil Suhail

Srinagar, Sept 17: In order to take a final call on municipal elections in Jammu and Kashmir, which are scheduled to be held in October, Congress has summoned its state leadership to New Delhi.
Well placed sources inside state Congress committee told Early Times that top leadership led by Congress state president Ghulam Ahmad Mir arrived in New Delhi on Monday to attend a crucial meeting.
"Whether to participate or not, it will be decided on Tuesday," a Congress leader told Early Times.
Kashmir-based political parties-National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-have already decided that they will not participate municipal and panchayat elections, dates for which state election commission announced last week.
Both the political parties want New Delhi to clarify its position on Article-35A that has been challenged by a right group-we the citizens- in country's top court.
The NC-led by Farooq Abdullah, earlier last week, announced that it will not participate in the polls "unless and until the government of India and state government clears its position, and takes effective steps to protect Article 35 A in and outside the court".
PDP also distanced itself from the elections soon after. "The situation created by linking panchayat polls with the case pending in Supreme Court on Article 35-A has created apprehension in the minds of the people, who see an assault on the special constitutional position of the state…It was felt that any attempt to impose any electoral exercise in the current atmosphere of fear and apprehension would seriously erode the credibility of the process… It (conducting elections) would defeat its very purpose," PDP president Mehbooba Mufti had said.
Few days ago, state Congress president Ghulam Ahmad Mir said that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir was not conducive for holding municipal and Panchayat elections.
"The situation is not conducive for holding municipal and Panchayat polls," Mir said, adding that the elections were declared without taking stock of the ground situation.
"The central government and state administration should make clear their stand whether they want to conduct the elections or is it just a gimmick," he had told media after a meeting in Srinagar. |
