Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 21: The Government of the day has raised hopes of a team from the state playing in the coveted Indian Premier League (IPL) and also the IPL matches being played at the stadia of the state soon. The spade work for the same has already been incepted, if the sources are to be believed.
Sources privy to the developments divulged to ET that the Governor Satya Pal Malik during a function at the SKICC in Srinagar recently expressed his desire to see a team from J&K in the IPL and asked his advisor to work in this direction. "IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla had called on the Governor at RajBhawan in Srinagar recently and assured to work out modalities in this regard" confirmed sources at RajBhawan. "Governor followed up the proceeds of the meeting and directed his administration to take up the matter with BCCI authorities vigorously. Sources also informed that a team of the IPL shall soon visit J&K and assess the facilities being developed on the proposed stadium at Bajalta and also MA stadium which is under renovation and is being developed as cricket stadium. The recent visit of 2-member team of the BBI, headed by Arun Lumba to the site of Bajalta stadium was a step in this direction. It deserves a mention that the district administration recently transferred 575 kanals of land to the JKCA for the construction of an all new cricket stadium at Bajalta, which was struck in litigations for quite some time.
The state government is banking on sports to channelize the energies of the youth of the state and bring them into the national mainstream. It is noteworthy that the Governor after meeting the Prime Minister at New Delhi after his appointment had in his maiden statement laid emphasis on developing sports and sports infrastructure in the state.
