Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 22: Despite assurance of former Governor NN Vohra to fulfil the vacant posts of doctors in hilly and remote district Doda, 85 percent posts of Medical Officers are lying vacant.
Rajesh Parihar, a social activist, informed Early Times that former Governor during his Doda visit had assured people of the district that he had directed the Health department to take measures so that there is no compromise on providing health care facilities to the people of remote and hilly district.
Vohra had visited Doda on August 5, 2018 through Public Outreach Programme.
He was shocked when it was brought to his notice that 120 out of 142 posts of doctors and 38 out of 53 posts of Consultants are lying vacant in various health institutions across the district.
"The district has 212 health institutions including a district hospital, two sub-district hospitals. How it is possible that merely 36 specialist and Medical officers can provide better healthcare services to more than four lakh people spread over four thousand square kilometers area that too a tough terrain", Parihar said.
He said that due to non-availability of doctors, majority of the Primary Health Centres are not rendering any sort of healthcare services to the people. Parihar said, "The hospitals at the district headquarter Doda are reeling under shortage of doctors and paramedical staff. One can imagine the situation in healthcare centres situated in hilly and remote areas".
The dismal scenario has also raised serious questions about the performance of legislators. The legislators of the district had given statements that they have take up the matter with higher authority regarding shortage of doctors in their constituencies, but to no avail.
Interestingly, despite having radiology equipment in district as well as sub district hospitals, in absence of manpower the doctors refer patient to district hospital Kishtwar or Udhampur which is hundreds of kilometers away from district headquarter Doda.
