Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 22: Chances are high that the government of India would hold parliament and assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir together, with Panchayat and Urban Local Bodies elections acting as a drill for the greater action.
In an interview with a New Delhi-based news portal, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik has trashed the speculations that any government will be put in place by defections in the state legislative assembly.
He said the government would focus on ensuing that Panchayat polls are held peacefully and successfully in the state. Here, the Governor hinted at how these polls will act as a drill for the state assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. "Once these are done peacefully, we will look at fresh elections as soon as possible," Governor was quoted as having said in the interview.
He added that the government doesn't want to cobble together a government through any underhand means. "After the ongoing elections, we will start looking at holding fresh elections for the J&K assembly. There is no plan to form a government by engineering defections," he said.
Meanwhile, as per the reports, the Panchayat and urban bodies elections are being held despite the stiff opposition from the Valley centric parties, in an attempt to prepare the dispensation, security grid and the people for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
Also, as per the political experts, it is most likely that the central government would want to hold the parliament and assembly elections in the state together as same would make the things easier and affordable for new Delhi both in terms of security and other expenditure.
Governor's rule was imposed in the state on June 19 this year when the BJP withdrew its support from the PDP and toppled the government. Till now, there were speculations that the two parties are trying hard to stitch the common ground together and form the government again. Also, there were reports that the rebel group led by the PDP leader Imran Ansari is preparing for a major coup and would form the government in the state.
However, these speculations are being rejected on ground by the political developments taking place in the state with central government looking in no mood to put the coalition government back in place.
There were also reports that the PDP may go again with the BJP and form the government. However, the recent interview of the PDP chief too made the situation transparent. She stated that her party would in now way tie up the alliance with the BJP again.
Meanwhile, the latest interview of the Jammu and Kashmir Governor has led to wide scale discussions about the possibility of central government holding the parliament and assembly elections at a same time. The possibilities of such a novel measure are being substantiated by the fact that parliament polls are just six months away, slated to be held in April next year. It is unlikely that if the government wants to hold the assembly elections soon, it would risk to go for two elections at two different times that too in a same year.
