SRINAGAR, Oct 18: Despite clear cut directions from courts and government to stem the rot the menace of child labor goes unchecked in Kishtwar district where several children are working as a bonded labour under the close nose of District Administration, police and newly created centrally funded ICPS department as photographs of child labor are continuously being shared by the people on the social media.
In a latest photograph shared by a local social activist from Kishtwar a minor girl of 8-10 years is being seen cleaning the main gate of the house of an influential person of the town with broom. The photo drew wide spread criticism as from across the board as soon as the photo got viral on the social media.
Speaking to Early Times Rashid Lone said that he was passing from the area on his motorcycle and noticed the girl cleaning the area outside the main gate.
He said that after noticing the girl, he turned back his motorcycle and clicked the photograph. He said that child labour in Kishtwar District is rampant and called upon the authorities to look into the menace.
Only few days ago, the picture of a school going girl in age group of 6-8 years of a local School at Malipath area of Kishtwar District was photographed while carrying the purse of the lady teacher along with her overburden school bag.
The sources said that no action was initiated against the said lady teacher even after week since the photo surfaced on social media. In another photograph three minor students in school uniform in Kichloo Mohallah Kishtwar were photographed while they were carrying LPG cylinder and like on two previous occasions, in this case there was no action as well.
Sources said that after surfacing of the photograph on social media, ICPS officer visited the said house, but till then the minor girl was dumped somewhere else and the house owner denied that any minor girl is working in the said house.
The sources said that local Child Protection unit has called upon the public to help them in identification of the minor girl so that necessary legal action could be followed. They said that majority of students studying in schools of Kishtwar town work as domestic helpers in the houses of teachers/Masters/ Government employees or in the houses of the relatives of the employees of Education Department.
The sources said that in many schools there were two to three dozen teachers for 40-50 students wherein these domestic helpers works while in rural areas hardly 5-10 teachers are available for 300-400 students.
In addition, several minor children are working as laborer in various hotels of Kishtwar town and its adjoining areas while at the same time District Administration and Police had turned blind eye towards the same.
