Cong wins 20 of 25 wards of Anantnag MC
BJP to control 5 MCs, Cong 3 in South Kashmir

Anantnag, Oct 20: In militancy-hit south Kashmir, the BJP emerged victorious in the urban bodies elections and will control five out of 20 municipal committees.
The party won 66 out of 132 wards while Congress won 53 and 13 seats went to independents. 125 wards out of 245 wards will continue to remain vacant as they didn't have any nominations.
Anantnag witnessed direct contest between BJP and Congress. Congress defeated BJP by winning 20 out of 25 seats of Anantnag MC. 3 seats of the council went to BJP and two seats were won by independent candidates. Congress state general secretary Hilal Shah defeated his rival by securing 60 out of 61 votes.
The unprecedented victory in South Kashmir will give BJP control of MC Pahalgam, Devsar, Shopian, Qazigund and Mattan.
The Congress has managed to win 53 seats out of 132. The party will have control of at MC Anantnag, Dooru-Verinag and Kokernag.
The BJP did well in Shopian where its candidates won in 12 wards unopposed. Five wards in the district did not have any nominations.
In Devsar MC, the BJP won all eight seats unopposed. The area is represented by Congress leader Mohammad Amin Bhat in the legislative assembly.
The BJP got a simple majority in Qazigund MC, winning four of the seven wards unopposed. The other three wards had no candidates.
In Pahalgam, the party won seven of the 13 seats uncontested, while there were no candidates for the remaining six seats.
In Mattan, BJP won 8 seats while as Congress just managed to won 1 seat. An independent candidate also while as one seat remained vacant.
Congress on the other hand recorded the trumping victory in Dooru-Verinag MC by winning 14 seats out of 16 unopposed. BJP got just two seats.
In Kokernag, Congress won 10 seats out of 13 while as 2 seats went to BJP and 1 remained vacant.
Out of 257 wards, elections were held only on 19 wards rest of the wards were either remained vacant or candidates were elected unopposed.
Out of 257, 125 wards of MCs in South Kashmir remained vacant as they didn't see any nominations. On remaining 132 wards, elections were held on 19 wards.
13 wards of Khrew, 12 of MC Awantipora, 9 of MC Tral, 11 wards of MC Pulwama and 12 of MC Pampore didn't see any nominations.
13 Wards of MC Frisal in South Kashmir's Kulgam district also didn't see any nominations.
In Aishmuqam, BJP will have the chance of taking control of MC as three out of four independent candidates are said to be in touch with BJP leadership.
In Achabal, BJP can likely take control as two independent candidates will support the party. Out of 7, BJP has two seats. Congress has won 1 seat and independent candidates have won two seats.
