Leaders who matter speak in different voices

While on one hand the Army Chief, Gen. Bipin Rawat, has supported stern action against stone pelters,on the other hand Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Saturday has said people of Kashmir ought to stand with the government and not with the separatists in the fight against militancy. "I think it is absolutely essential for all of us ...that in this battle, we need the Kashmiri people on our side. It's a battle for sovereignty, it's a battle against separatists and militants and the key is also held by the people," he said.Gen. Rawat seems to be angry with the death of one Army personnel in stone pelting and that is the reason for his plea for stern action against those engaged in stone throwing against securitymen. In fact on an average stone pelting starts whenever the security forces carry out cordon and search operations or some slain militants or taken to the burial ground or whenever encounters between the security forces and the militants take place. "And therefore approach of the Government has to be guided by the fact that those people are on our side, and not with the separatists," he said while delivering the first Atal Bihari Vajpayee Memorial Lecture here. He regretted that at a time when the country is dealing with troubles being fomented from across the border, some local groups have joined them and the worst sufferers are Kashmiri people themselves."How do we resolve the situation? Governments have said that we are ready for the most logical option. We are willing to talk to people, we are willing to even interact and involve regional mainstream parties into it," he said These talks should have begun long back but Pakistan is trying to misguide common people and the separatists. And Islamabad feels that talks and terror could coexist but India is determined and wants Pakistan to stop export of terror to Jammu and Kashmir and end assistance to militants in crossing over the Jammu and Kashmir for hiking the level of violence. Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik has said need of the hour was to tell people that armed struggle was not solution and alleged that political leadership in the state had only made false promises to the people in last 50 years."For the last fifty years, the political leadership in the state had only made false promises to the people. Be it the promise of freedom. Freedom with Pakistan's help or autonomy," Governor said at an event, here.He said the need of the hour was to tell people that the armed struggle was not the solution. There is a need to inform people that we want to kill terrorism not them. The policy of healing touch is needed, but what is needed more is development and removing corruption and unemployment," he said Killing terrorism and not the terrorists is not the way to end terrorism. These are leaders who matter with different voices that make people a bit amazed.
