Early Times Report
srinagar, Nov 14: In what could be a major setback for the recently elected Mayor of Srinagar Municipal Corporation Junaid Mattu, the councilors who supported him have warned Mattu of withdrawing their support if he did not listen to their grievances and addressed them.
Former National Conference leader Mattu on last Tuesday was elected as the Mayor of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC).
He managed to get 40 votes in the corporation elections while as Congress backed candidate got 26 and four votes were declared invalid.
Mattu had contested the polls from ward No. 14, 18 and 65 of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation.
However, the councilors, who supported him in getting elected as SMC Mayor are aghast over his not listening to their grievances.
"He is not picking up our calls. We are even not allowed to meet. He should shun the rigid attitude and work for betterment of Srinagar," one of the councilors said. These councilors according to source Wednesday held a meeting and decided to withdraw the support if Mattu did not address their issues.
"We have been elected by people. What is the fun in getting elected if we don't address the grievances of people," another councilor said, who wished not to be quoted by name.
The councilor said there are numerous issues which have to be addressed in Srinagar. "The sanitation is a big issue," he said. He said Union Ministry of Urban Development, in its survey has given Srinagar sanitation ranking of 241.
An official of the Housing and Urban Development Department said that state performed "poorly" in implementing the sanitation scheme in the last several years in the state. "All districts of the valley including Srinagar could not achieve their target due to delay in releasing of funds and situation has been not conducive to do sanitation works," the official said. "Now it all depends how the newly elected Mayor would address them," the official added.
Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation has also found J&K one among the worst performing states in India in implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission in the last three years.
