Doctors unpunctual at JVC hospital

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 16: Doctors including seniors at the SKIMS-run JVC hospital here in Srinagar are accused of coming to work late. Some patients alleged that many doctors seldom complete their duty hours. "Despite heavy flow of patients at the OPD in this hospital, most of the doctors arrive and leave at their own will, forcing patients, no matter how much serious cases they have, to wait for hours," Habibullah, a patient who had come to hospital for treatment, said. The patients said that long queues are a common feature at the OPD in this hospital. "The OPD is supposed to open at 10:30 am, but majority of the doctors do not turn up for duty on time," Shabana, another patient, told Early Times.
An official in the Health department said that lack of inspection from the concerned authorities has given leeway to the doctors to show up for duty whenever they deem necessary. "Most of these doctors either run private clinics or work in private hospitals," he said and added that the hospital management is least bothered about the serious lack of punctuality by the doctors. The patients also complained of non-availability of medicines and accused the JVC hospital doctors of prescribing only those medicines which are available with the chemists the doctors refer them to. "Many doctors are also linked with private nursing homes where they practice. These doctors put pressure on the visiting patients to get their treatment done at the nursing homes," said the patients.
Director SKIMS was not available for comment.
